25+ Iconic Movie Moments That Everybody Remembers Wrong

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Darth Vader’s big reveal is one of the most quoted moments in movie history, which makes it even more impressive that almost everybody remembers him saying, “Luke, I am your father.”

Despite what decades of bad impressions would have you believe, Vader never actually says Luke’s name there. The real line is, “No, I am your father,” which is less handy if you’re doing the voice at a party, but much more brutal when your entire family tree is collapsing in real time.

Casablanca

Casablanca is one of those films that people quote even if they have never actually sat down and watched the whole thing, which is probably how “Play it again, Sam” became more famous than anything anyone really says in the movie.

Despite its reputation, nobody in the film says that exact line. There are a few similar requests for Sam to play the song, but the neat little quote everyone remembers is really just pop culture giving the script a rewrite.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

The Evil Queen’s mirror scene is so iconic that most people can picture it instantly, right down to her supposedly saying, “Mirror, mirror on the wall.”

Unfortunately, the mirror itself may need to fact-check this one. The Queen actually says, “Magic mirror on the wall,” which means generations of fairy-tale impressions have been confidently addressing the wrong piece of enchanted furniture.

Citizen Kane

Citizen Kane is built around the mystery of “Rosebud,” so it is easy to remember it as a puzzle the characters eventually solve after all that investigating.

They do not. The audience discovers what Rosebud means, but the characters never do, which is a very elegant way of saying that sometimes the deepest truth about a man’s life gets thrown into a furnace while everyone else is busy writing the wrong obituary.
