A Normal Morning

For Rachel Miller, life with her 8-year-old daughter Sophie had always felt peaceful. Their mornings were usually filled with cereal bowls, school bags, and Sophie talking excitedly about her drawings. Nothing about that morning seemed unusual at first.

But before Sophie even left for school, Rachel would notice something she couldn’t explain.

The First Patch

Sophie was getting dressed when she suddenly called her mother into the bedroom. On her shoulder was a small pale patch of skin Rachel had never noticed before. Rachel leaned closer and assumed it was just dry skin or irritation from Sophie’s shirt.

But the patch looked too smooth, too perfect, almost like it had been placed there.

Mom Dismisses It

Rachel gently rubbed some cream onto the patch and told Sophie not to scratch it. Sophie nodded quietly, but then said the patch felt cold against her skin. Rachel told herself it was nothing serious and sent Sophie off to school like any other day.

But Sophie kept touching her shoulder as if something beneath the patch was still there.

The Patch Changes

The next morning, Rachel noticed the patch on Sophie’s shoulder looked darker than before. It had also spread slightly past the place where Rachel had put the cream the night before. She told herself it was probably just irritated skin, but her stomach tightened as she looked at it.

The patch had changed too much in only one night.
